Values are the underlying principles, beliefs, that guide a nonprofit and its board and employees in their every day decisions and actions.
When mployees disagree with an institution's values, there may be room for dialog and revisiting. But, if the dialog does not change the position of the boss?
Well, if you are the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, the answer is that the individual in question has to go. And so this is exactly what Pope Francis has done with a priest who has ventured out diametrically opposed to the Pope's position on gay marriage and women priests. The lesson in some nonprofits: the boss is always right. An equally important message: nonprofit values matter.
