Nonprofit Research Based Revenue Generating Businesses

I don't have the answer for the question raised by the New York Times article on Universities and the revenue generating ventures that arise out of their research activities but I do wonder: are other types of nonprofits engaged in activities that could lead to similar opportunities?  Certainly a question each nonprofit board and staff might annually visit wearing their "generative" hat.
