Because Tuesday was national Giving Tuesday there have been some stories about philanthropy. One of those stories by Thalia Beaty from Associated Press reviewed a recently released report by the Gates Foundation which discussed the subject of why billionaires don't give more. I can admit that after reviewing the article I am unconvinced and maybe would be more enlightened by the full article.
But the jist of the report is that billionaire giving is complicated with one statement summarizing: "that unlike everyday donors, who may give in response to an ask from a friend or family member, the wealthiest donors end up deliberating much more about where to give. I for one don't think this 100% sure from my experience but plausible to some extent. But the more irritating statement in the article was this: "sometimes donors struggle with how to make a difference, given that philanthropic funding is tiny compared to government spending or the business sector." This is just false as the number from Giving USA illustrate.
My opinion: redistributing wealth is not a priority for the haves until it becomes one.
