The recent resignation of Pastor Robert Morris from the mega-church he founded raises I believe more questions about the so-called Elders, aka Board of Directors, than it does about Mr. Morris.
The public rendition of Mr. Morris' apology? and resignation (see CBS news among other press sources) reflect Mr. Morris' admittance that he lied about his extramarital affair. Yes, he said he had an affair some 30 years ago as a evangelical minister but not with a young woman, which was not I think professional or moral, but even less moral and professional, a 12 year-old making the act, sexual assault. This fact was not relayed to the Elders (his board of all men) who basically took the position supposedly with the limited knowledge that Morris singularly violated his personal marriage vows and needed repent and do good works and move on.
Mr. Morris did just that: repent, build a mega church, and moved on. He also built a net worth of $117 million and supposedly hid his truth while keeping his marriage in tact AND even becoming a spiritual advisor to President Trump (yup, Trump had a spiritual advisor). But the 12 year old survivor has come of age and chosen to not let go of the abuse she endured. She has come forth to tell the story while reiterating that she has attempted multiple times to tell her story to some including Church Elders.
So, while Mr. Morris is no longer the simple founder/pastor of Gateway, he can certainly retire perhaps in shame but..... Meanwhile the Elders have committed to hiring a fancy law firm that will somehow investigate the situation as there are many questions although one of these questions is not how culpable are the Elders. Will they get away with not being responsible? Is it possible they could be above god's and man's laws?
