One article that recently caught my eye was about the Sundance Institute. Having had the opportunity to lodge at the Institute for a board meeting I can only say it is one really cool place. But how cool the place is is not the subject of this article. It was about the board and members moving into new positions, not necessarily new members.
One line explains the board's role: "The Board of Trustees holds the fiduciary responsibility for the Sundance Institute and works closely with the staff to develop strategic priorities that align with the values and vision of founder Robert Redford."
But there are additional parts of the article that raised little yellow flags for me. In particular, board members appear not to have term limits. Term limits are an important component of sustainable governance and even though the board is comprised of well-connected, even monied, individuals who clearly are also connected to the mission, there are many more folks who would fit this description and could enlarge the reach of the Institute. Anyway, do read this article yourself and consider what you might keep or do different to have a healthy, engaged and sustainable board.
