Quotes from this story refer to the Southern Poverty Law Center and Morris Dees (the founder and exec). Mr. Dees has essentially been an institution within the institution fighting the good and important fight against racism. But as these quotes indicate, even "saints" can err and it's up to the board of directors to right the wrong.
Kudos to these directors for taking a very difficult step. I do hope they have learned one lesson: there will need to be time for grieving at this loss: internally and externally. I trust the board will take this time and use communications with staff and donors in particular and additionally, not run out and get a replacement right away - evidence has proven that the right next step is to recruit an Interim Exec. who can provide the time needed to prepare for the next exec.
