A board is severally and wholly responsible for its actions. Last night, following a multitude of failings, the board (Elders) of the megachurch, Willow Creek, resigned. The members admitted to having failed in their responsibility of oversight of the founder and senior pastor who resigned earlier this summer.
It is unclear what processes is in place to replace the elders. I am hopeful that these steps are written somewhere but would be more optimistic if the church members took it upon themselves to step-in and start a new process whereby they select the Elders after establishing clear criteria and a process. This would be the best lesson learned from this experience I would think.
Anyway, for now, a chapter is closed, at last.
