In a typical morning, I review a number of newspapers that might provide fodder for a blog entry. Today I came across the following Reno Gazette Journal Letter to the Editor that gave me pause enough to think this was worth considering. The letter was from a candidate for a local school board and what most caught my attention was her statements about her board experience. Specifically, with a full-time job, she has been on one board for 15 years (so much for term limits) and been chair of the United way an served on 13 other boards AND taught board governance (again, clearly not talking about term limits or how many boards one can effectively serve at any one time) and teaches and had a small business and been a parent and grand parent.
This is clearly one over achiever in my opinion. But seriously, just how many boards can or should anyone serve at the same time especially with a full-time job? And what about those term limits? Just how effective do you think someone doing all this can be?
I am a candidate for the Washoe County School Board, District G, and I want to share with you both my record and my vision for the future.
First, the record. I served you for 15 years as the Washoe County manager, working with our 3,000-plus elected officials, employees and citizen volunteers to guide us through the recession, earning a bond rating upgrade and a 90-plus percent voter approval rating of our handling of the fiscal crisis. I served on the board of EDAWN for 15 years, was the chair of the United Way board, chaired or served on 13 other nonprofit boards, and taught board governance as a United Way volunteer. I have a master’s degree from the UNR College of Education, and have been a teacher and counselor as well as a successful small business owner, parent and grandparent. I currently teach innovation to local governments through the national Innovation Academy. I’ve been endorsed by the business community, educators, parents and working people. My skills and experience have prepared me well to serve you as school board trustee.
