Thanks to the Johnson Amendment, nonprofits can't endorse political candidates. And, thanks to the Johnson Amendment, nonprofits have learned to use their talents and mission to help the public and their constituents focus on the critical issues that affect their lives, community and world - basically, become better informed when voting.
Tax exemption is a privilege, not a right (it's not in the Constitution). Rules like the Johnson Amendment help maintain nonprofits as vehicles for ensuring that there is a "space" between the public sector and for-profit sector. Were these rules not in place, nonprofits would or could look more like those entities in some countries that become or are sanctioned by the "State" and those that do not agree with the "State" would be eliminated.
