A 29-member committee representing a range of nonprofits has been tasked to come-up with recommendations to adjust the rules that govern New York nonprofits. Hooray that the state's attorney general thought to ask and hooray that there will be input from more than just lawyers.
Nonprofit regs are important for supporting donors and hopefully, achieving more and better outcomes (although the connection is not always clear). I do hope however that this committee will see fit to find means for engaging as many other nonprofits as possible in the conversation - surveys, focus groups, interviews, whatever. I would hate to think that this committee would behave like, oh..., the Independent Sector for instance. You know, that organization where most nonprofits can't even afford the membership fee, never mind the conference registration. Does IS say some good things for the sector? Sure. Does IS really represent the sector and all its parts -- I don't think so.
So New York Committee, please include others. Yes, you are wise but your wisdom is not the only wisdom in the state.
