I say it's always for the better when a public is moved to raise the bar of accountability a bit higher. Such is the reaction now occurring over the scandal caused by Mr. Mortenson's charity which hasn't been doing what its founder says its been doing.
Of course this is first a matter of governance. A board is obligated to provide oversight and ensure that it does what it promises to do when accepting the public's money. When it fails, the public is right to, at minimum, not give more.
The good news: all charities will now be more accountable -- maybe. But that is what it looks like will happen as is chronicled in the Wall Street Journal follow-up story covering this matter. Good I say!
Now, what about these boards?
