The last UMKC plenary. The presenter: Professor Chao Guo from the University of Georgia. The topic: Diversity and Governance.
Prof. Guo offers that an important question about diversity is what is the goal: substantive or symbolic representation? He offers that representation can be achieved through a formal (election); descriptive (meet certain %'s; or inclusive (participatory which may involve more than just assigning seats but for sure means substantive).
But, if diversity is singularly defined as representative, it may not actually meet a higher goal of inclusiveness which is important to remember that the goals of diversty and inclusiveness is to ensure that decisions about direction include the folks who are being served to then again ensure that service is delivered where it is needed and valued.
