The Edgar Allen Poe House in Baltimore has been advised it has 1.5 years to find alternate sources for the $85,000 in operating support it currently receives.
The good news: the museum has 1.5 years. The bad news -- the museum has no sustainability plan in place and so, it only has 1.5 years to do what many museums generally take 3+ years to accomplish.
"Now's the time for all good men to come to the aid of their countrymen." This quote is from Charles Weller, a typing teacher, but the message is certainly applicable to the Poe House and many others who once benefited from their respective municipality's largess. But for sure, these are different times when municipalities must choose between many competing demands.
More importantly, museums like the Poe House, with a capable and strategic board should have seen the writing on the wall some time ago. And apparently the Poe House Board did not. Do I believe that Poe lovers will come to the aid of their museum? Sure. But the lesson stands: nonprofit boards who are dependent on municipal coffers should wake up and smell the flavor of the day which likely won't include them.
