As you may know, Comcast is trying to acquire NBC. The acquisition includes a plan, highlighted by the New York Times, to partner with the nonprofit news organizations that have evolved from the devolution of newspapers.
This promise by Comcast to partner as a way to ensure "local" and more serious (my word) news has me wondering how much of a good thing this partnering plan will really be for the nonprofits.
The current sustainability model for the nonprofits is essentially a dependence on philanthropy and some kind of subscription arrangment with its readers. Reliance on philanthropy and and subscription provides hope for sustainability and perhaps more importantly, the freedom to report without worrying how a story might affect a sponsor/advertiserser and hence the bottomline. Yes, it's still a bit too early to tell if the model is truly sustainable and the big infusions of donor cash up-front have helped belay the true test.
Meanwhile, if Comcast has to fulfill a promise it is making in order to satisfy regulators, I have to wonder what this promise looks like in terms of how much money it will be paying as a partner and, subsequently, at what point this partnership dominates the choices the nonprofits make regarding what they report.
