Back in June 2010, according to the TribStar, the national office of the NAACP told their Terre Haute, Indiana branch that its officers all had to leave their posts as the branch was not following policies.
I checked this out noting that in today's Chicago Tribune, a new president was announced. The TribStar did not go into any details about the removing all the officers from their posts but I am pretty confident that this is an unusual event. And, I imagine that no national office takes such action without serious considerations.
This does make me wonder about the governance structure over at the NAACP and similar national organizations where the national office actually does have the authority and power to remove a local's officers. Does this mean that the local "chapters" are legally and fiduciarily branches of the national such that the local officers are really, effectively appointed by and accountable to the national board? And if this is the case, why exactly is there an election of officers at the local level? I would welcome anyone's knowledge about how this works.
