MinnPost.com has developed a sustainability strategy that may or may not be viable according to the paper's founder, chief executive and editor. The strategy: "a hybrid formula of membership, ads, sponsorships, events and foundation support."
The strategy appears to be holding water and can maybe serve as a model for other new media -- the replacement sources for all that has been lost in the press. Membership in particular makes sense as a "if you want it pay for it" approach. On the other hand, membership doesn't do much for building media serving the public.
Be that as it may, my big question: where's the board? From the New York Times article, I get the sense that EVERYTHING about the future of this paper rests on the shoulders of Joel Kramer, the founder, chief executive and editor. But a nonprofit has to be more than the sum of its parts to remain viable. My advice to Mr. Kramer: if the future of this paper singularly rests on your shoulders, go recruit some more or different board members. You would be amazed at the roles they can play to ensure your organization's future.
