We in the US generally view nonprofits and the nonprofit sector as as an integral part of the landscape. In fact, citizen's whole quality of life would seriously be affected without nonprofits. As is generally described, nonprofits fill the void between the for-profit sector and the government sector.
Friday's NPR Morning Edition article on China NGO's serves as a reminder of how accepted nonprofits are in the US. As the article noted, the government of China, not elected mind you, treats its nonprofits as though they don't really care for them but it hasn't totally removed the nonprofit as an entity. However, some groups must file as corporations and pay taxes if the government does not view that group's activities "in the best interest of the government". This clearly contradicts, from a US perspective, the purpose of a nonprofit sector.
