Here's a puzzle: what type of organization acts like a for-profit; has a nonprofit-type mission; and, accepts business checks or money orders but no personal checks?
The answer: Amiya's Mobile Dance Academyin Detroit. Founded, owned and operated by an 11 year-old superstar, Amiya's even has a mission statement: "to further the art of dance in an extended cultural community which will provide dance training and community programs for all youth". And behind this mission, the desire to address childhood obesity.
But, while Amiya's does accept donations and sponsorships, it is not a nonprofit (or at least there's no evidence that it is on either Guidestar or Amiya's site.
Is there a so what? One so what is to accept that there are some really talented kids out there in the world and given resources, they can do some pretty great things. The other is to prospective donors: be sure you know if your donation is deductible. Just because an organization looks and acts like a nonprofit doesn't mean it is. This of course doesn't mean you shouldn't make a donation. After all, statistics indicate that folks are not driven to give as much by the tax deductibility of a nonprofit as the mission. Amiya's Mobile Dance Academy may be one of those investment opportunities.
