It may be too late for the lesson that the boards of a wide-variety of New Jersey's nonprofit historical and cultural organizations are about to learn. Having a large portion of your budget depending on government funding is not a very reliable sustainability strategy! At the same time, for those who say there are too many nonprofits to equitably support, your day has arrived!
On this occasion I am referring to New Jersey Governor Christie's proposed budget which will eliminate some major line item grants to nonprofits, forcing them to join the fray in competing for already limited funds. No, it will not be a good day for some of New Jersey's biggest historical and cultural sites. However, a more important question remains for these nonprofit boards: could you not have seen this coming?
There may yet be opportunities for strategies like back-room consolidation to keep some orgs going with little loss of mission, but for others, the death knell may indeed be ringing. Question for my readers: Is this ultimately all bad for the community and philanthropy?
