Can nonprofits really be the long-range source of news for communities?
As I have questioned all along, financial sustainability is the at the center of this question, not content. Sure, I believe nonprofits can provide relatively objective news for its communities -- well, at least news that is mission-driven -- the stuff good journalism is about.
But the financial feasibility of a nonprofit media -- that's another question as is nicely outlined in today's New York Times which discusses the matter as the early testing is being rolled-out in San Francisco. The model: "Instead of relying on advertising for revenue, the old-fashioned way, these groups raise funds from foundations, businesses and individuals. In addition, they sell the journalism they produce."
I'm not totally seeing the advantages of this model over the failed model of commercial journalism but only time will truly tell.
