From the Philadelphia Inquirer, Here's the WHYY Board Chair's response to the stories about over-paying the CEO. When first reported here, I defended that corporate boards in particular can indeed set a compensation criteria that makes sense to them. Of course, they just have to get the public/donor to agree...
A Nov. 9 article ("Pay package awarded to WHYY chief questioned") may have led some to wrongly conclude that Marrazzo's annual salary as CEO is $740,000. This number included, among other things, multiple years of unpaid deferred compensation accruals.
WHYY's board absolutely understands its obligation to develop compensation packages directly linked to performance and to utilize outside compensation experts to "market-test" all of our executive-compensation levels. Based on applying these standards, Marrazzo's 2007 annual salary was $393,018. This base compensation, as reported in public filings, places him well within the competitive set for comparable positions.
During Marrazzo's 10-year tenure, WHYY has advanced on every front.
The media landscape is ever-changing, and we recognize that a continual campaign to improve execution of every aspect of our strategy is essential. Highly motivated, committed leadership has been and will remain the defining difference in our success. Marrazzo's dedication and creativity has held WHYY in excellent stead, and his tireless efforts have well positioned us for future accomplishments.
