Digital consciousness and governance: these are not two concepts I would intuitively combine but the following article makes a good case for precisely otherwise. According to the article, the digital world has major implications for nonprofits and nonprofit boards. It is not surprising that what is digital can have a significant impact on the way nonprofits do business with their constituents and donors, but the same can be said for their boards.
According to the article, nonprofit boards should include at least one member who understand the digital world and impact on their nonprofit. At the minimum, there are laws related to intellectual property ad telecommunications and privacy that all affect policy and plans and boards should be in the know. Whether there needs to be one or more board members or just knowledgeable staff is a choice but the fodder should be clear to the board.
