Recruiting new nonprofit board members is a never-ending task (assuming term limits). Often times I have heard that this task is so daunting the only criteria is that the recruit be alive. Others do however go a step up trying to match a skill set with an organization need. Sometimes this is a fair strategy although oftentimes a bit too formulaic for my taste. I would pose that one essential criteria should be passion for mission and perhaps commitment to the organization's Theory of Change.
Because there is minimal difference between the processes for recruiting board members and recruiting personnel, I find it helpful to review what is the latest tactics and criteria being considered in the Human Resource industry. In a recent HR blog I found a criteria I think very helpful for nonprofit board recruitment: cultural fit. Here's some passages I want to highlight.
