For the many nonprofits tasked with the day-by-day, year-by-year challenge of getting the resources necessary to achieve mission, Teach for America can share a lesson: do really good and visible work, attract a really large donor and let that really large donor(TFA) attract some other really large donors. And, once there are some really large donors in the room, have them think about the organization's future and start an endowment.
OK, so I wasn't in the room to get the specifics but you get the idea. Anyway, check-out Teach For America's big endowment news and remember, what TFA needs for an endowment doesn't match what every nonprofit needs for a sustainability strategy. Also, be sure to note the other parts of TFA's sustainability strategy. An endowment is essential but it's one piece of the puzzle.
